How to cleanse your face

How to cleanse your face correctly.

When I ask people ‘ do you cleanse your skin?’ the reply I often hear is ‘Yes I use a make-up wipe every night to remove my make-up’. This is great, at least they are removing their make-up at night and not going to bed with a full face on.

However, this is not cleansing your skin. The best way for me to explain is liking it to washing dishes.. (bear with me here!) you wouldn’t just rinse a dirty plate/dish under a tap then eat of it, would you? You’d rinse it then wash it with fairy liquid or put it in the dishwasher, yeah? Ok most people would. Or if you had dirty hands you’d maybe rinse them under the tap to get the muck off then you’d lather up with some soap and then rinse them?

Washing-Dishes

It’s the same with your face. When cleansing your face you should always cleanse twice. Once to remove your make-up or to remove general daily build up (moisturisers, environmental pollution, bacteria from touching your face). And the second time to CLEAN the skin itself.

Once your skin is squeaky clean you can then go on to apply your daytime/night time products.

Picking a cleanser suited to your skin.

If your skin is oily you may prefer to use a cleanser that lathers or is lighter in texture, maybe with tea tree, if your skin is dry you may prefer a cream based cleanser and if you have sensitive skin you may want to use something that has calming ingredients. Whatever you use make sure it’s a good quality product that is not too harsh. You can always book a free consultation with us and we can help you pick the best one for your skin, I’ve put some recommendations at the bottom of this post.

Toners

This is a product that comes up a lot in conversation. Do we need a toner? In short, no. It is a way of completing a double cleanse, cleansing once with a cleanser and then cleansing again with a toner. But toners are often too astringent/harsh on the skin and strip it of some barrier function. Avoid toners if you can, even if you have oily skin. Just double cleanse and rinse with cool water.

Cleansing step-by-step

Step 1

Wash your hands, then remove your eye make-up.

Step 2

Pick your cleanser and put 2 pumps into your hand and work into a lather (if your cleanser doesn’t lather it’ll just warm it up)

Apply in circular motions all over the face and neck, be gentle around the eye area.

Step 3

Remove by either splashing with water, or use a wet cleansing cloth or use cotton wool pads. Whichever you prefer.

Step 4

Repeat steps 2 & 3

Step 5

Pat dry & apply usual correctors/serums & moisturisers and if it’s morning don’t forget your SPF 30!

My next blog will be on exfoliation, how, when and what to use.
